What Does a Manager of Maintenance & Repair Do at APL?

As the Manager of Maintenance & Repair (M&R), you will oversee all repair and maintenance activities for CMA CGM equipment such as refrigerated containers, dry containers, chassis, and gensets. Your region of responsibility includes the Pacific Northwest (Seattle, Tacoma, Portland), Alaska, and major Canadian cities like Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.

You will manage vendor relationships, approve and audit repair estimates, and identify cost-saving opportunities, ensuring M&R costs remain within corporate guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage M&R costs ensuring adherence to CMA CGM corporate budgets
  • Review and approve repair estimates through digital systems (Newport for US, iMars for Canada)
  • Maintain inspection programs for on- and off-hired equipment
  • Conduct vendor audits and quarterly site visits for cost-saving opportunities
  • Rebill third-party damages accurately to responsible parties
  • Support port operations with cargo surveys and distressed load handling
  • Oversee mechanics and maintenance personnel at Seattle Terminal T-18
  • Collaborate with procurement to develop a cost-effective vendor network
  • Analyze repair data to identify trends and recommend cost-saving initiatives

Qualifications & Skills Required

  • Vocational or Technical Diploma required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • 5-10 years of experience in the shipping or general industry, with strong M&R knowledge
  • Proficient in managing refrigerated trailers, chassis, gensets, and container repair standards
  • In-depth understanding of the US and Canadian equipment operating environments
  • Familiarity with ILA Major Damage Criteria and HAZMAT requirements
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively under pressure
